• Lasix

    This pharmaceutical product is a well-know diuretic remedy that affects renal function.

    This "Loop" diuretics medicine is produced in form of tablets and solution for injections. The most popular form is tablet, it contains 20 or 40 mg of Furosemide (an active ingredient of the drug). The additional ingredients are: corn starch, pregelatinized cornstarch, lactose, anhydrous colloidal silica, talc, Mg. It is also knows as Frusenex, Frusemide, produced by Aventis, Geno, Medibest drug companies.

    How Lasix works

    The drug has a diuretic effect by blocking the reabsorption of sodium and chloride in the ascending part of the Loop of Henle. To a small extent Lasix acts on the convoluted tubules, this mechanism is not related to anti-aldosterone activity or inhibition of carbonic anhydrase. Lasix contributes to the excretion of potassium, magnesium, calcium.

    In case of ingestion the diuretic effect of Lasix is achieved within the first hour, reaching a peak af-ter 1.5-2 hours, the duration of action is about 7 hours.

    In the body Lasix is metabolized and excreted primarily by the urine, in the form of compounds with glucuronic acid.

  • - Acute left ventricular failure;
  • - Burn disease;
  • - Preeclampsia pregnancy (Lasix can be prescribed only after the restoration of the volume of cir-culating blood).
  • 2. Forced diuresis.
  • 3. Combined therapy of hypertension.

  • How to use this drug

    Dosage and dosing schedule should be set individually depending on the degree of violation of wa-ter and electrolyte balance, the value of glomerular filtration. The adjustment of a further dosage is alway required, depending on the severity of the patient's condition, the magnitude of diuresis. Usually the drug is prescribed in tablet form, but if this is not possible, or it comes to urgent condi-tions, the drug is administered intravenously. With an average degree of severity of edema syn-drome the recommended dosage of Lasix is 20-80 mg orally, when it's not effective enough, the dosage can be increased to 40 mg, only in the case of oral intake. The increased dosage may be prescribed not earlier than 6-8 hours after receiving the oral dose. The dosage may be changed until an adequate diuresis. Matched thus single dosage can be taken once or twice a day. The maximum effect from Lasix occurs if the drug is given 2-4 times a week. For children, the dosage depends on the child's body weight and the mode of administration of Lasix. The initial dose is typ-ically taken orally 2 mg / kg.

    During the combined treatment of hypertension, the dosage of Lasix usually is 80 mg / day. It is preferable to split the daily dosage into two intakes. A further increase in the dose is impractical, if the remedy is not effective - it is necessary to add other antihypertensive agents.

    Lasix side effects

    During the intake of Lasix in high dosages there may be a decrease in blood volume, it may cause the development of blood clots and thrombosis. The common side effects are: the development of water and electrolyte imbalance - alkalosis (including an enhancement of metabolic alkalosis in diabetes); the deficiencies of sodium, chlorine, calcium and potassium; breach of the biochemical properties of blood: increased creatinine, cholesterol, triglycerides, uric acid (with an acute exacerbation of a gout), glucose (especially in diabetes).

    Some allergic reactions may also occur, ranging from cutaneous manifestations (purpura, dermati-tis, pruritus, erythema) and up to anaphylactic shock.

    There rarely may appear blood disorders: leukopenia, eosinophilia, hemolytic changes, agranulo-cytosis, thrombocytopenia.

    In preterm babies, the usage of Lasix during the first weeks of life can lead to non-closure of an arterial duct.

    The use of furosemide may reduce the reaction rate and concentration, especially after the intake of the first dose of the drug or during concomitant use of alcohol, this should be taken into account by persons working with complex mechanisms or with any type of transport.


    The are the following contraindications for the drug: an explicit electrolyte disturbances, intolerance to furosemide or any other component of the Lasix, anuria, dehydration, low volume of circulating blood, hepatic coma of any stage, pregnancy up to 12 weeks and the period of lactation. During the later stages of pregnancy, the use of the this rx drug is possible only under strict indications, since the drug can penetrate through the placental barrier.

    Do not use Lasix during lactation, since the drug can not only penetrate into breast milk, but also to inhibit the process of milk production.

    It is advisable to prescribe Lasix in combination with potassium drugs for the prevention of hypoka-lemia and during continuous monitoring the electrolyte composition of the blood.

    Interaction with other remedies

    The development of hypokalemia while taking Lasix may lead to increased quantity of cardiac gly-cosides.

    During the intake of Lasix combined with corticosteroids or with laxatives, there should be a more careful control of the electrolyte composition of the blood, since the receiving of the combination of these drugs increases the risk of hypokalemia. When the drug is combined with an antibiotic of cephalosporin group or aminoglycoside, it may raise their level in blood and therefore lead to side effects.

    Probenecid, phenytoin and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) may reduce the diuretic effect of Lasix.

    When Lasix is used with the inhibitors of an angiotensin-converting enzyme, simultaneously, it may increase the hypotensive effect, until the development of collapse or loss of kidney function and acute renal failure.

    The combination of Lasix and antidiabetic agents requires the dose correction of the antidiabetic preparation.

    Lasix is able to enhance the toxic effects of theophylline, lithium drugs and curariform remedies.


    The treatment with Lasix is aimed at restoring fluid and electrolyte balance and normalize the cir-culating blood volume. In case of overdose, you may experience hypotension, disturbance of elec-trolyte balance, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision.
